Web 2.0 Word Processors

Via a message from Yvan Cloutier to his Eurêka list that linked to ResearchBuzz!, I ended up reading an excellent article on Web-based word-processors here at Innerphaze. Look there for the Ajax Office Chart comparing the features of these various word processors. I decided to try Writely, the highest-rated of these Web 2.0 Web-based applications. You have to subscribe to access the application. For now, the subscription is free. With Writely, you can write a document by yourself or in collaboration with other writers. You can post the document to your blog, as I expect to do with this write-up. If you are reading this post, then I have succeeded!

Roger Shattuck, Writer and Translator

Hilton Kramer, co-editor of the New Criterion, writes on Roger Shattuck, writer and translator, who passed away on December 8, at the age of 82, in today's Wall Street Journal:

It isn't often that a scholarly study of avant-garde literature and the arts running to some 400 pages acquires the status of a literary classic, but that has been the happy fate of a delightful book called, "The Banquet Years: The Origins of the Avant-Garde in France, 1885 to World War I," whose author -- the American writer and translator Roger Shattuck -- died on Dec. 8 at the age of 82.

Read a review in The Midwest Book Review here (do a Find with "trivium" once you get to the page). A remarkable book by a remarkable teacher (Sister Miriam Joseph Rauh, C.S.C., 1898-1982). Full disclosure: This is one I am reading now. I always wanted to look into answers to the questions, "What is language? How does it work? What makes good language?" (Editor's Introduction, p. vii) Since translation is writing, the value of a book like this is obvious.

Recuerdos de provincia - A Translation by Asa Zatz

My colleague Asa Zatz sent me some time ago an autographed copy of his translation, with Elizabeth Garrels, of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento's Recuerdos de provincia (Recollections of a Provincial Past), edited with an introduction and chronology by Elizabeth Garrels. Google better with these tips from Subnixus:

link:www.yoursite.com - This command will show you all of the backlinks to your site. Handy tool for finding out who is linking to you.

related:www.yoursite.com - This command will show you a list of pages that Google thinks are related to your site in some way.

site:www.yoursite.com - Searches only those pages from the site you list.

allinurl: - If you start a query with [allinurl:], Google will restrict the results to those with all of the query words in the url. For instance, [allinurl: google search] will return only documents that have both “google” and “search” in the url.

define: - The query [define:] will provide a definition of the words you enter after it, gathered from various online sources. The definition will be for the entire phrase entered (i.e., it will include all the words in the exact order you typed them).

inurl: - If you include [inurl:] in your query, Google will restrict the results to documents containing that word in the url. For instance, [inurl:google search] will return documents that mention the word “google” in their url, and mention the word “search” anywhere in the document (url or no). Note there can be no space between the “inurl:” and the following word.

Traduïm: un portal de recursos

Josep Tarrés, a quien mencioné en la nota sobre el Diccionario panhispánico de dudas, ofrece Traduïm, un portal con un gran número de recursos de traducción. Recomiendo una visita. Por ejemplo, Search dictionaries permite encontrar diccionarios en línea mediante la indicación del idioma de origen y llegada y la especialidad. La página de Reference Works presenta una amplia lista de obras de consulta.

Diccionario panhispánico de dudas

Josep Tarrés en TraduBits escribe sobre el Diccionario panhispánico de dudas:

Esta obra de referencia, consensuada por las veintidós Academias de la Lengua Española, pretende dar respuesta a una serie de preguntas posiblemente frecuentes de los hispanohablantes.

A juzgar por las imágenes de muestra y las explicaciones que podemos ver en la web de la RAE, parece que este diccionario se ha basado en el uso de la lengua en los medios mas influyentes de España y de Hispanoamérica. Además, se utilizan citas textuales de publicaciones reales para ilustrar el uso de algunas palabras.

Blog or Website? That is the question

In the last two months or so, I have been posting to this blog almost daily. That has helped me to learn a bit about blogging. On a trial-and (mostly)-error basis, I have now learned how to add Ads by Goooooogle, and boxes from Amazon.com, Blogarithm.com and Bloglines.com, as well as a box for OneStat.com, to keep track of visitors and page views.

This blogging activity has been made much easier with Elicit, an inexpensive but feature-rich blogging program that allows me, among other things, to painlessly insert Technorati tags into my postings. You can also use the free Qumana blog editor. It's not as feature-rich as Elicit, but it makes it easy to insert the all-important Technorati tags in your postings.

If you are often thinking about setting up a website, and never get to it, I recommend that you give blogging a try. A blog is easy to set up and maintain and, most of the time, is free. You do not need professional advice to set up and maintain a blog, as opposed to a website. Read Paul Chaney's posts on business blogging here.

Your first posting can contain your business information, which can also be included in your profile. As time goes by, you can add new entries if necessary. What's most, you can always edit these entries to correct errors or add information!

Blogger.com guided me step-by-step in the blogging process. Also, a good number of add-ons work with Blogger.com, including a Word for Blogger add-in that lets you blog directly from Microsoft Word.

Adding your blog's address to your e-mail signature and business cards will help publicizing your website, I mean, blog.

Blogarithm.com and Bloglines.com are news aggregators that let your readers keep up with postings to your blog. You can also use Google Reader or NewsGator.

Translators in the blogosphere: Rodolfo Windhausen

In his new blog, Anselmo Windhausen, my Miami-based friend and fellow translator Rodolfo Windhausen has published a biography (in English and Spanish) of his German-born grandfather.

Rodolfo, who is also a veteran journalist and tango expert, also publishes Tango News, "a trilingual Weblog for information, commentary, articles and analysis of tango as a genre and as a dance."

Amazon.com's Search Engine

A9, Amazon.com's own search engine, offers some interesting features. You can simultaneously search these categories: Web, Book, Images, Yellow Pages, Reference, Movies, People, Blogs, Wikipedia, as well as Your History, Your Diary, Your Bookmarks and More Choices (a pull-down menu with many, many choices).

The site offers these explanations for the Tools:

Your History: We allow you to record a trail of all sites you have seen. You can search that trail at any time. A9 Toolbar users can turn this feature on and off with one click.

Your Bookmarks: We provide you with server-side Bookmarks that will always be available (and searchable) from anywhere. Your Diary: We let you create notes as you browse the web. Wikipedia's Woes

This is a summary of Jason Fry's article of the same title (subscription required) in The Wall Street Journal Online, dated December 19, 2005.

It's been a strange couple of weeks for Wikipedia. First the online, volunteer-created encyclopedia was blasted by a retired newspaper editor who found a phony bio about himself in its listings. That controversy soon became a furor in which Wikipedia's entire workings were put on trial. While the debate was still going on, Wikipedia then got an unexpected boost from a venerable science publication that said its scientific entries stacked up well against those of Encyclopedia Britannica, the standard Wikipedia's founder has said is his goal.

The furor began with a Nov. 29 article in USA Today by John Seigenthaler, an administrative assistant to Robert Kennedy in the early 1960s and the founder of the Freedom Forum First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University. Mr. Seigenthaler related his discussions with Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia's founder, and his anger at finding himself the victim of hit-and-run character assassination that rode high in Google search results for his name for more than four months. Mr. Seigenthaler seemed genuinely pained by the push and pull between the freedom of speech he's long championed and the lack of accountability on Wikipedia. Mr. Brandt's efforts led Brian Chase, the delivery firm's operations manager, to resign and hand-deliver a letter of apology to Mr. Seigenthaler.

Even though we've heard innumerable times that the Web has let anyone be a publisher, too often we treat print on a screen as if it's been through the quality-control processes behind books, magazines or newspapers -- not that such publications are anything close to infallible. In the meantime, we should bear in mind Mr. Wales' warning that students and researchers shouldn't cite Wikipedia. Check out Wikipedia's entries on deconstructionism, the history of records, or the Replacements, then consider that those entries and some 868,000 others are the work of volunteers.

Modus operandi:  Hacer clic con el cursor al comienzo del bloque, pulsar Ctrl-Shift-F8 y extender la selección hasta incluir todo el texto que se desea marcar. Por ejemplo, tenemos una lista con números de orden (1), 2), etc.) y queremos borrar sólo los números. Este procedimiento nos permite hacerlo con comodidad.

Vertical Search Engines

In Beyond Google, in today's Wall Street Journal, Kevin J. Delaney offers an informative panorama of "vertical" search engines. I have summarized the article with a bit of help from Copernic Summarizer.

While Google Inc., Yahoo Inc. and Microsoft Corp. are great at serving up answers to many types of queries, they aren't always the best way to find specialized information. You'll often get thousands of results for your query -- but many of them end up off-topic, and there's no easy way to narrow them down to get to what you want. That's where a growing crop of specialized search sites comes in.

These "vertical" search engines target a single vertical, or industry, category. Instead of trawling through billions of Web pages to find results, the way the big engines do, vertical engines limit their searches to industry-specific sites. Vertical sites all draw their data from a range of sources and generally don't engage in any sorts of transactions themselves -- they simply pass users along to the source of the information.

Violencia de género: 1 - Violencia doméstica: 0

Una nota sumamente interesante en La página del idioma español, comenta las recomendaciones de la Real Academia Española al respecto. Recomiendo su lectura.  

Durante los últimos años, se ha hecho común en los medios académicos usar la palabra género en lugar de sexo, para referirse a los papeles que la sociedad atribuye tradicionalmente a hombres y mujeres y que, en última instancia, se derivan siempre del sexo.

En efecto, el uso de género es, en este caso, un calco semántico inadecuado del inglés gender. En español, el género define apenas un accidente gramatical que modifica a los sustantivos y determina su concordancia con artículos y adjetivos y que, en la mayoría de los casos, tiene poco que ver con el sexo.

La discusión, por esclarecedora que sea, tropieza con la realidad de la sanción oficial del término "violencia de género", entendida como "violencia sobre la mujer" o "violencia contra las mujeres", en la legislación española. En puntoycoma (n º 94 /septiembre/octubre de 2005) figura la reflexión que figura infra.

"Género", por ley

Los acalorados debates sobre el problema del sexo-género han llevado a la plaza pública una discusión iniciada hace ya años por sociólogos y luego, inevitablemente, por traductores¹. Conviene recordar que la Ley Orgánica 1/2004, de 28 de diciembre, de Medidas de Protección Integral contra la Violencia de Género consagra en la legislación española el neologismo "género", al menos en la expresión "violencia de género". Y ello a pesar del desacuerdo de la Academia², que defendía la expresión "violencia doméstica", y contra la reacción airada de algún académico³.

La aceptación de "género" en nuestra legislación, después de un debate público y tras no pocos titubeos, es tanto más significativa por ser más consciente. La mencionada Ley Orgánica recoge, en su explícita y exhaustiva exposición de motivos, la discriminación positiva en la que se basa la lucha contra la "violencia de género". Este enfoque del legislador ha invalidado, sin duda, la propuesta "violencia doméstica^4_", en la que se aplica restrictivamente el adjetivo doméstico a "la mujer" o a "la mujer en el hogar".

La Ley Orgánica define la "violencia de género" en su artículo 1, pero en algunas Comunidades Autónomas se ha profundizado aún más en este concepto. Así, por ejemplo, en la Comunidad de Cantabria⁵, se tipifican diez conductas que se consideran violencia de género.

Con posterioridad a la Ley Orgánica, otros instrumentos jurídicos han establecido una clara sinonimia entre "violencia de género" y "violencia sobre la mujer" o "violencia contra las mujeres»; por ejemplo:

REAL DECRETO 237/2005, de 4 de marzo, por el que se establecen el rango y las funciones de la Delegación Especial del Gobierno contra la Violencia sobre la Mujer, prevista en la Ley Orgánica 1/2004, de 28 de diciembre, de medidas de protección integral contra la violencia de género

En el BOE de 12 de abril de 2005 se publicó una corrección de errores a la Ley Orgánica 1/2004 que afecta exclusivamente a la denominación de los juzgados específicos, quizás motivada por la oposición al concepto de género de ciertas asociaciones judiciales:

En la página 42168, primera columna, en la exposición de motivos, en el apartado III, párrafo vigésimo primero, segunda y tercera líneas, donde dice: "...Juez de violencia de género,...", debe decir: "...Juez de Violencia sobre la Mujer,...".

TV interpreters are a disgrace to the profession

In Canada, since we are an officially bilingual country, we often get to hear simultaneous interpretation (French-English, English-French) on TV. Tonight was another such occasion: the first televised debate of the leaders of the four main parties. This first debate was carried on in French entirely and interpreted simultaneously into English for English Canadians.

With all due respect, but 99% of the "interpreters" selected for such live TV events in Canada are totally incompetent. Very often native French speakers "interpret" into English, thus "regaling" the English-speaking audience with incomplete and incomprehensible sentences.

Some time ago, I reported about an extremely bad case (incidentally, the "interpreter" in that case is still working for the CPAC network on a regular basis).

Several TV viewers have complained about the quality of simultaneous interpretation on tonight's debate. One viewer, for example, has this to say:

Notice how Mr. Harper was stuck with the "translator" who just passed grade 8 French. What a retard.

I have often wondered about where they recruit these people. It's not only the "interpreters" for live TV that are lousy, but also a lot of the interpreters who are employed by the House of Commons or other levels of (federal) government. Makes you wonder whether they are hired on the basis of political connections only.

Well said, Werner! Translators are usually working behind the scenes. But interpreters are up front, as the voice of the speaker. As far as the viewer is concerned, they are the speaker. They under as onerous a duty as translators to properly render the speaker's statements. As in translation, when the public "hears" the interpreter, they are not hearing the speaker.

Ceux et celles pour qui le Guide anglais-français de la traduction est bien familier peuvent légitiment penser que ce nouveau dictionnaire trouvera une place privilégiée parmi leurs usuels. Nos collègues anglophones eux-aussi seront certainement très intéressés par cet ouvrage, puisqu'il est bilingue. El "cocoliche"

La Página del idioma español publica un extracto de La fascinante historia de las palabras, de Ricardo Soca*, sobre El "cocoliche": la lengua de los inmigrantes italianos:

Antonio Cuccoliccio fue uno de los tres millones de inmigrantes italianos que desembarcaron en el puerto de Buenos Aires entre fines del siglo XIX y comienzos del siglo XX en busca de una vida mejor. La Argentina era el granero del mundo y uno de los países más ricos del Planeta, rebosante de promesas que alentaban los sueños de jóvenes pobres en varios países de la vieja Europa.

A poco de su llegada, Cuccoliccio consiguió un empleo como peón en el circo de los hermanos uruguayos José y Jerónimo Podestá, en el cual se dedicaba a menesteres de limpieza, cuidado de los animales y servicios menores. Su forma de hablar, en la que se mezclaban palabras del italiano y del castellano, no llamaba la atención. En el Buenos Aires de entonces, era común oír a los tanos (de napolitano, se aplicaba a todos los inmigrantes italianos) que intentaban comunicarse con las mismas dificultades que Cuccoliccio.

Un día, el cómico Celestino Petray se presentó en escena hablando como había oído que lo hacía aquel peón: Mi quiamo Franchisque Cocoliche e sono creolio hasta lo güese da la taba e la canilla de lo caracuse, amico. En sus memorias publicadas bajo el título Medio siglo de Farándula, José Podestá contaría años más tarde que en aquel momento nació un personaje cómico, Cocoliche, que durante algunos años hizo las delicias del público en ambas márgenes del Río de la Plata.

Y también había nacido algo que Podestá no previó y que Cuccoliccio, con su jerga de idiomas mezclados, no habría podido siquiera soñar: una palabra del idioma español que figura en el Diccionario de la Real Academia desde su edición de 1927, cocoliche, definida como la 'jerga híbrida que hablan ciertos inmigrantes italianos, mezclando su habla con el español'.

Advice to budding translators

In article in Gabe Bokor's Translation Journal titled A Fitting Trade for a Misfit, Alex Feht has this t advice for budding translators:

Who am I to give advice? OK, I'll try. From the bottom of my heart.

1. Take care of yourself, sleep as much as you want. Don't translate more than 10,000 words in a day; this is bad for your eyes.
   
2. Don't work for peanuts but, on the other hand, don't worry too much about money. They won't let you become rich, anyway. We live in the world of mandatory compassion: the more you make, the more they take.
   
3. Bewildered and tired, losing track of who you are, what you are doing, and why? Re-read Kipling's If. If this doesn't help, re-read Kipling's The Gods of the Copybook Headings. That drastic measure unavailing, take a swig of brandy. Never translate under the influence, though. Customers have no sense of humor, they think they are always right.
   
4. If you can write very well in your native language, you already have a skill necessary to become a successful translator. The rest is hard work.
   
5. If you can't write very well in your native language, no advice will help you. The rest is silence.

TextMorph

I have been using this application for quite a while, and it really works very, very well. I have cleaned many ASCII texts, including e-mails. It removes trailing spaces, that bane of ASCII texts, or adds them if you so wish, changes line spacing and cleans up e-mails (either standard texts or poems/lists). Try it. You'll like it!

"TextMorph is a FREE powerful ASCII text formatter. It is also a text editor, similar to Notepad. There are lots of text editing programs around, but TextMorph has a number of things that set it apart. TextMorph has a number of "tools" that you can apply to the text, such as converting from text to HTML and vice versa, cleaning up emails (removing all those ">" signs and so forth), search and replace by words OR multiple paragraphs, changing upper/lower case, etc. - all with the click of a mouse! You can also create your own custom tools that utilize the pre-set tools. Plus, with the Multiple File Morph wizard, you can apply tools to a large group of files at one time, without having to open and edit each file. This makes TextMorph an ideal program for people who work with large numbers of text files or archives of HTML or text content, as it can quickly and easily apply formatting to all files.

But most people can benefit from TextMorph if for no other reason than using it to quickly "clean up" forwarded emails. TextMorph is a fairly simple program to use, but it is also very powerful and provides many advanced options including command line processing of files and the ability to actually make your own tools and interface them with TextMorph, which can be very useful to programmers.

TextMorph runs on all 32-bit Windows platforms from Windows 95B on, and is easy to install and uninstall. It has been thoroughly tested on Windows 95B and Windows XP. Complete program information and examples are given in the help file that comes with the program."

Frederic Davey Luke R.I.P.

No compliment to a translator can be greater than saying that the translation is better than the original. Yet this is what Stephen Spender said of David Luke’s translation of the poetry of — of all people — Goethe. Even allowing for the hyperbole, David Luke, the German scholar, critic and for some 30 years tutor in German at Christ Church, Oxford, was not only an outstandingly prolific and accurate translator but also one who, in his translations, produced poetry and prose which are adjudged works of art in their own right. (...) David Luke, scholar and translator, was born on July 13, 1921. He died on December 5, 2005, aged 84.

Frederic Davey ("David") Luke, German scholar and translator: born Clevedon, Somerset 13 July 1921; Lecturer, Manchester University 1947-59; Lecturer in German, Christ Church, Oxford 1959-60, Student and Tutor in German 1960-88 (Emeritus); died Oxford 5 December 2005.

A worthy Google Foundation initiative! Dr. Brij Kothari, President of PlanetRead, says:

The wonderfully named and not-at-all bureaucratic French "Commission générale de terminologie et de néologie" strikes another winning blow against cultural imperialism. It has decided that the offical word for weblog will be 'bloc notes' meaning note pad, with the official short-form being 'bloc'.

Which if you have a French accent, will sound pretty much the same as 'blog'.

They're bureaucratic enough to have a committee to decide what the word will be, whilst being pragmatic enough to choose a word that is phonetically almost exactly the same as the existing foreign word.

Fantastic. How can a country have 10% unemployment when there are people being paid to do this? (via Loic le Meur)

Translation Notes es uno de los weblogs en español con más solera; la primera entrada (o post) data del 17 de diciembre de 2002, es decir, casi en la prehistoria de la blogosfera. Sin embargo, no pude localizarlo en mi primera búsqueda de bitácoras sobre traducción. Este weblog incluye, según la descripción de su autor, "Recursos, noticias, ideas y herramientas de traducción, de inglés y francés a español y viceversa en particular".
